Alexa will let you search for top web sites by category so you can find sites that have the most authority. This tells you where you might pitch your story – search for the category it fits into and see what comes up. Pitch to the sites that fit (some will be blogs).

Here are the top 10 news sites according to Alexa

1. Yahoo News

2. BBC Newsline Ticker

3. CNN – Cable News Network

4. BBC News

5. Google News

#6 is MyYahoo which is your Yahoo Page to track your news sources, so it’s not relevant and I’m not going to count it on this list. I also didn’t include Weather.com but they have news also.

6. The New York Times

7. MSNBC News

8. The Huffington Post

9. Fox News Channel

10. Reuters

You can get your press release into some of these sites through an online distribution web site or service such as one of the wire services, PRLeap, PRWeb, 24-7pressrelease, etc).

    I’m surprised that neither John Stewart or Stephen Colbert were in the top 10. I’ll bet in the television arena they are considered a top news source.
