In my online pr book I list free press release distribution sites. I generally don’t like them because they are often clunky and hard to use. But it beats sending an email to journalists (doubtful anyone will see it, not even them).
There’s a helpful list of free press release distribution sites on this blog post. Why? Because these are sites that Devon has used for her clients and she gives helpful reviews.
I added my comments about her list:
24-7pressrelease.com will not publish a free release for days/weeks. They also don’t answer emails for days. If you want to get approved, pay them something, even $10 or $20 (they let you choose the amount). But the video press release service can’t be topped for the price of $89 (hint: they give discounts on their Twitter account).
Here’s why it’s worth paying for distribution – if the site is of decent quality they will review each press release. Otherwise they get spammed and Google devalues links from them. It takes people to do this and that costs money because it’s time intensive and you can’t automate it entirely. So you pay for that and things like the ability to edit press releases, get stats and phone support.
In general free press release sites should be used for low quality news. Things like a new hire.
Test them though.

Hi Janet – thanks for the mention and the useful additional information. I agree – if you can afford it, you should use a paid service. You get what you pay for. It’s worth testing the free sites if you are working on a no/low-budget project though.

Yes I checked 24-7 Press release service and the coupon code does save money and it is awesome to know they are good to use.
I used http://www.free-press-release.com and http://www.prlog.org and had good results.
Have you used canadian news wire services.. They came up with social media releases that I heard are fantastic but or boy they are pricy…
Thank you again for sharing and look forward to reading your book… I use PR for my marketing campaigns all the time. always learning..
Thank you

Tatyana,
Thank you for your comment & for sharing your experience with some of the free wire services. They are always changing so you have to keep up on them. One day they’re highly ranked and valuable but next month they could tank (or they might be mediocre and get better).
I haven’t used Canadian news wires – do you have any specific sites? I try to keep a list of niche sites but my emphasis is on the US.
Blog on,
Janet

PRZOOM.com / NewswireToday.com are both extremely popular, I use NewswireToday service since over 2 years, content MUST be very professional to be published.
Romania-based PRLog.org are accepting too many spam, content, I do not wish my content been exposed in such type of websites. Hope this help!
